RTA Celebrates Milestone Groundbreaking for the Euclid Corridor Project
Hundreds of supporters and community partners gathered on Playhouse Square at Star Plaza to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Euclid Corridor Project on October 19th.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norm Mineta participated in the historical ceremony by giving the keynote speech and publicly signing the Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) with RTA officials to mark the Federal Transit Administration's commitment to fund the remaining Project construction and development costs.
"This could very well be one of the most important days for the city's future," declared Secretary Mineta. "With this groundbreaking, this venerable thoroughfare begins its return to glory as the crown jewel of Cleveland."

Also participating in the ceremony were Ohio Governor Bob Taft, U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich,U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Cleveland Mayor Jane L. Campbell, and Cuyahoga County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones.
"Today is just the beginning of making the Silver Line a reality," said Joseph A. Calabrese, CEO and general manager of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. "We are determined to keep our eye on the ball, and maintain our focus until this transit line is complete."
Pre-construction utility work is currently being conducted by the City of Cleveland along Euclid Avenue. Construction on the $168.4-million project, which extends from Public Square to the Stokes Rapid Transit Station at Windermere in East Cleveland, will begin in March 2005.
RTA Awards its First Construction Contracts
The RTA awarded local contractor Anthony Allega Cement Contractor, Inc. the first construction contract for roadway and pavement reconstruction in the Project's Transit Zone. The contract includes work for pavement, restoration, new concrete bus pads, utility adjustments, pavement markings, installation of ADA ramps, new traffic control signage, and limited sidewalk and curb repairs on St. Clair and Superior Avenues from West 3rd Street to East 18th Street, and on Chester Avenue from East 12th Street to East 17th Street. Such construction will insure that these streets can handle the increased bus traffic that will be redirected when Euclid Avenue construction starts in 2005 and Euclid Corridor vehicles begin operating in 2007.
The next contract to be advertised is in the spring of 2005 for work to be completed on Euclid Avenue from the Innerbelt to East 79th Street. For more information about future construction projects, contact the ECTP Information & Construction Hotline at 216-566-5178.
